That's where [CredenShare](/compare) fits, alongside whichever you choose.\n\n*Who this page is for: teams choosing a business password manager, and anyone who shares credentials with clients, contractors or vendors.*\n\n## 1Password vs Bitwarden at a glance\n\n| | 1Password | Bitwarden |\n|---|---|---|\n| **Free plan** | No; 14-day trial | Yes, with unlimited passwords and devices |\n| **Personal** | $3.99/month (first-year offer $2.99), billed yearly | Premium $1.65/month, billed yearly ($19.80) |\n| **Family** | $5.99/month for 5 people (first-year offer $4.49) | $3.99/month for up to 6 people |\n| **Business** | Teams Starter Pack $24.95/month for up to 10; Business $8.99/user/month | Teams $4/user/month; Enterprise $6/user/month |\n| **Encryption** | AES-GCM-256, end-to-end | AES-CBC-256 with HMAC, end-to-end |\n| **What unlocks the vault** | Account password **plus** a 128-bit Secret Key | Master password, with PBKDF2 or Argon2id |\n| **Open source** | No (per [independent reviews](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/bitwarden-vs-1password/)) | Yes |\n| **Self-hosting** | No: a hosted service (its Connect and SCIM components can run in your infrastructure) | Yes |\n| **Certifications** | SOC 2 Type 2; ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 | SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, ISO 27001; HIPAA audits |\n| **SSO** | Unlock with SSO (OIDC) on Business | SAML 2.0 and OIDC on Enterprise |\n| **Audit log** | Business: 365 days of events | Teams and Enterprise: event logs, viewable a year at a time |\n| **Sharing with non-users** | Item links: 1 hour to 30 days, or one view | Bitwarden Send: text or files, deleted within 31 days |\n| **Collect a secret from an outsider** | Not found on its pages | Not found on its pages |\n\n*Checked on October 23, 2026 against each vendor's own pricing, security and help pages; prices in USD; see the sources below.*\n\n## Which is cheaper, 1Password or Bitwarden?\n\n**Bitwarden costs less on every comparable plan**, and it is the only one of the two with a free plan. The one exception is 1Password's flat-rate pack for small teams, below.\n\nFor a 10-person team, billed yearly:\n\n| Plan | Per month | Per year |\n|---|---|---|\n| Bitwarden Teams (10 × $4) | $40.00 | $480.00 |\n| Bitwarden Enterprise (10 × $6) | $60.00 | $720.00 |\n| 1Password Teams Starter Pack (up to 10) | $24.95 | $299.40 |\n| 1Password Business (10 × $8.99) | $89.90 | $1,078.80 |\n\nThe exception is very small teams: 1Password's **Teams Starter Pack** costs a flat $24.95 a month for up to 10 people. That can undercut Bitwarden Teams at around 7 or more users, though Teams Starter Pack covers 20 people at most and lacks some Business features.\n\nTwo other costs to weigh. **Bitwarden Secrets Manager**, for machine credentials, is priced separately: free for 2 users, then $6 or $12 per user per month. 1Password doesn't list a separate price for its developer tools (CLI, service accounts, SSH agent); service accounts are rate-limited by plan.\n\n## Is Bitwarden safer than 1Password?\n\nBoth are strong, independently audited, end-to-end encrypted password managers. Neither company can read your vault. They differ in *how* they protect it, and in how much you can verify yourself.\n\n### How 1Password protects your vault\n\n1Password combines your account password with a **Secret Key**: a 128-bit random key created on your device and never sent to 1Password. Even someone with your password can't decrypt your data without it. Data is encrypted with AES-GCM-256, keys are derived with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 (650,000 iterations for accounts created since January 2023), and sign-in uses Secure Remote Password so your password never crosses the internet.\n\n### How Bitwarden protects your vault\n\nBitwarden derives your keys from your master password on your device, using **PBKDF2-SHA256** (600,000 iterations by default) or **Argon2id**, a memory-hard function that is harder to attack with specialised hardware. Data is encrypted with AES-CBC-256 with HMAC authentication, and all keys are generated and managed on your devices.\n\n### What you can verify\n\n- **Bitwarden is open source.** Anyone can read the code, and it runs annual source-code audits and penetration tests. Its 2025 audits by Cure53 covered the core application, desktop app and browser extension.\n- **1Password is not open source,** but publishes a detailed security design white paper, holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001-family certifications, and runs a public bug bounty on HackerOne.\n\n**Bottom line:** 1Password's Secret Key protects you even if your password is weak or leaked. Bitwarden's openness lets you, or anyone, check its claims, and Argon2id is available. Both are sound choices; for most teams the deciding factors are price and administration, not encryption.\n\n## Which is better for business administration?\n\n| | 1Password | Bitwarden |\n|---|---|---|\n| **SSO** | Business: Unlock with SSO via OIDC (Okta, Entra ID, Google Workspace, JumpCloud and others) | Enterprise: SAML 2.0 and OIDC |\n| **Provisioning** | Business: automated provisioning (Okta, Entra ID, Google Workspace, JumpCloud, OneLogin) | Teams and Enterprise: SCIM, or Directory Connector (including LDAP/AD) |\n| **Policies** | Business: role-based vault permissions, custom reports | Enterprise: e.g. require SSO, require two-step login, remove export, manage Send |\n| **Audit trail** | Business: 365 days, plus an Events API for SIEMs | Teams and Enterprise: 60+ event types, CSV, API and SIEM integrations |\n| **Guests** | 5 on Teams, 20 on Business, one vault each | Not described on its pages |\n\n**1Password** suits companies that want a managed, opinionated setup on Business. **Bitwarden** suits companies that want SAML, LDAP, granular policies or self-hosting, at a lower per-seat price, on Enterprise.\n\n## Which is better for developers?\n\nBoth now ship an **SSH agent**, so your SSH keys stay in the password manager.\n\n- **1Password:** a CLI, **service accounts** for automation (up to 100, rate-limited by plan), self-hosted **Connect** servers for a private REST API, and Git commit signing.\n- **Bitwarden:** a full CLI and a separate **Secrets Manager** for machine secrets, with machine accounts and its own pricing.\n\n## How do 1Password and Bitwarden share with people outside your company?\n\nBoth can send a credential to someone without an account, with limits:\n\n- **1Password item sharing** creates a link to one item, open to anyone or to verified email addresses. It lasts 1 hour to 30 days, or one view, as your admin allows. Items with files over 250 MB can't be shared.\n- **Bitwarden Send** shares text (up to 1,000 characters) or files (up to 500 MB, 100 MB on mobile; Bitwarden's help pages point to Premium for files). It is deleted within 31 days, with an optional password, view limit and email verification on paid plans. It's encrypted on your device, and the key isn't included in network requests.\n\n## What neither 1Password nor Bitwarden does\n\nBoth are built around **your** vault. At its edge, three jobs come up again and again that neither covers on its own pages:\n\n1. **Collecting a credential from someone outside.** A client's hosting login, a vendor's API key: there's no request form, so it usually arrives by email or chat.\n2. **Proof that an outside handoff arrived.** Their audit logs track your organisation; a per-link record of each view, with time and IP, isn't described for item links or Sends.\n3. **Longer or conditional handoffs.** Links end within 30 or 31 days, and we found no option on either to start the clock at the first open.\n\n[CredenShare](/compare) is built for exactly that edge, and works with either password manager:\n\n- **Secure Requests** (Business and Enterprise): send a form with the fields you need; the answer is encrypted in the sender's browser.\n- **Access logs** for every share: views, times and IP addresses, kept 3 to 180 days by plan.\n- **Expiry from 1 hour to 3 months**, optionally from the first open, plus passcodes and view limits.\n- **Slack, a browser extension, a REST API, SDKs and an MCP server** for AI agents.\n\nKeep your credentials in 1Password or Bitwarden. Use CredenShare when one has to cross the edge. Read more: [CredenShare vs 1Password](/compare/1password) · [CredenShare vs Bitwarden](/compare/bitwarden).\n\n## Verdict: 1Password or Bitwarden?\n\n- **Pick 1Password** if ease of use, travel mode and a guided business setup are worth the higher price.\n- **Pick Bitwarden** if price, open source, a free plan or self-hosting matter most.\n\nWhichever you choose, plan for the handoffs it isn't built for: collecting credentials from outside, and proving an outside share arrived.\n\n---\n\n**Sources** (checked October 23, 2026):\n\n- **1Password:**\n - [pricing](https://1password.com/pricing/password-manager), [business pricing](https://1password.com/pricing/business)\n - [security](https://support.1password.com/1password-security/), [security design](https://agilebits.github.io/security-design/deepKeys.html), [PBKDF2](https://support.1password.com/pbkdf2/), [assessments](https://support.1password.com/security-assessments/)\n - [SSO](https://support.1password.com/sso/), [provisioning](https://support.1password.com/provisioning/), [activity log](https://support.1password.com/activity-log/), [guests](https://support.1password.com/guests-teams/)\n - [share items](https://support.1password.com/share-items/), [manage sharing](https://support.1password.com/manage-item-sharing/), [service accounts](https://www.1password.dev/service-accounts/), [SSH](https://www.1password.dev/ssh/)\n- **Bitwarden:**\n - [pricing](https://bitwarden.com/pricing/), [Secrets Manager](https://bitwarden.com/products/secrets-manager/)\n - [security white paper](https://bitwarden.com/help/bitwarden-security-white-paper/), [KDF algorithms](https://bitwarden.com/help/kdf-algorithms/), [compliance](https://bitwarden.com/compliance/), [audits](https://bitwarden.com/help/is-bitwarden-audited/)\n - [self-hosting](https://bitwarden.com/help/self-host-an-organization/), [SSO](https://bitwarden.com/help/about-sso/), [SCIM](https://bitwarden.com/help/about-scim/), [policies](https://bitwarden.com/help/policies/), [event logs](https://bitwarden.com/help/event-logs/)\n - [Send](https://bitwarden.com/help/about-send/), [Send lifespan](https://bitwarden.com/help/send-lifespan/), [Send encryption](https://bitwarden.com/help/send-encryption/), [SSH agent](https://bitwarden.com/help/ssh-agent/)\n\n*1Password is a trademark of AgileBits Inc.
