CredenShare is not a password manager and does not replace it.\n- **Add CredenShare** when a credential has to reach someone outside your 1Password account (a contractor, a client, a vendor, an AI agent) with a passcode and a record of who opened it, or when you need a credential **from** someone outside.\n- **Use 1Password's own item sharing** for a quick, one-off share of an item that already lives in your vault.\n\n*Who this page is for: teams that already use 1Password and regularly exchange credentials with people who don't.*\n\n## What problem does each tool solve?\n\n**1Password** answers *\"where do our credentials live?\"* It is a password manager for individuals, families and businesses: an end-to-end encrypted vault, apps and a browser extension that fill passwords and passkeys, and admin tools (Watchtower, SSO, provisioning, an activity log) for running it across a company.\n\n**CredenShare** answers *\"how does this credential get to that person, and how do I know it arrived?\"* It sends a credential through an encrypted link that expires, records every view, and, with Secure Requests, lets someone outside your company send a credential **to** you through a form that encrypts their answer in their browser.\n\nThe two meet at the edge of the vault. Inside it, 1Password does the job. At the edge, teams often fall back on email, chat or a ticket, which keep a copy of the secret long after it was needed. That gap is what CredenShare is for.\n\n## Can you share a 1Password item with someone who doesn't use 1Password?\n\nYes. 1Password's item sharing creates a link that people without a 1Password account can open. On its help pages:\n\n- A link can be open to **anyone with the link**, or limited to **specific people**, who verify their email address. Business accounts can also limit links to an approved domain.\n- On Business, admins set the maximum and default lifetime of links: **1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 14 days or 30 days**, and can make links expire **after one view**.\n- Items with individual files over **250 MB** can't be shared, and files can't be shared during a free trial.\n\nFor a one-off share of something already in your vault, that works well. What it doesn't do is the other direction: we found no way, on 1Password's pages, to **request** a credential from someone outside your account.\n\n## What does CredenShare add to the handoff?\n\n### Collecting credentials from people outside your company\n\n[Secure Requests](/solutions/secure-requests) (Business and Enterprise plans) send someone a link to a form with the fields you choose, such as \"API key\" or \"Database password\". Their browser encrypts each answer to a key that belongs to the request before anything is sent, so the answer reaches you without passing through email or chat in readable form. You can require the submitter to sign in, with two-factor authentication, and reuse field templates across requests.\n\n### A record of every view\n\nEach share keeps an access log with the time and IP address of every view, for 3 to 180 days depending on the plan (not on the Free plan). When a contractor says they never got the password, you can check.\n\n### More control over a single link\n\n- **Passcodes** sent through a second channel (Solo plan and above), with a limit on failed attempts.\n- **Expiry from 1 hour to 3 months**, optionally counted from the first time the link is opened, plus **view limits**.\n- **Require sign-in**, and two-factor authentication, for a particular share.\n- **IP allowlists** (Business and Enterprise).\n\n### Handoffs where your team already works\n\nA **Slack** app (Plus and above), a **browser extension** for Chrome and Firefox, and for developers a **REST API, SDKs for Node, Python, Go and Rust, an MCP server** for AI agents, and **webhooks** (Business and Enterprise).\n\n## CredenShare and 1Password side by side\n\n| | CredenShare | 1Password |\n|---|---|---|\n| **Built for** | Sending a credential to someone, or collecting one from them, through an encrypted link that expires | Storing, syncing and filling passwords and passkeys for individuals, families and businesses |\n| **Everyday password storage and autofill** | No | Yes |\n| **Share with someone who has no account** | Yes, the core feature | Yes, item sharing by link |\n| **Link lifetime** | 1 hour to 3 months, optionally from the first open, plus view limits | 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 14 days or 30 days, or one view (Business admin settings) |\n| **Passcode on a link** | Yes (Solo and above), with a failed-attempt limit | No; links can be limited to specific people who verify their email |\n| **Access log per share** | Views, times and IP addresses, 3–180 days by plan | Business has an account activity log kept 365 days |\n| **Collect a credential from someone outside** | Yes: Secure Requests (Business and Enterprise) | Not found on its pages |\n| **Developer tools** | REST API, SDKs, MCP server, webhooks | CLI, service accounts, Connect server, SSH agent |\n| **Free plan** | Yes: 3 shares a day | No; 14-day trial |\n| **Price** | Paid plans from $9.99/month (Solo) | Individual $3.99/month (first-year offer $2.99); Business $8.99/user/month; billed yearly |\n\n*1Password details checked on October 23, 2026 against its own pricing and support pages; see the sources below.*\n\n## What can each company's servers see?\n\nBoth are designed so their servers don't hold your secrets in readable form, but they protect different things.\n\n- **1Password** encrypts everything in your account end-to-end with AES-GCM-256. Your vault is protected by your account password **and** a 128-bit Secret Key that never leaves your devices, and sign-in uses Secure Remote Password (SRP) so your password isn't sent over the internet.\n- **CredenShare** encrypts each share in your browser or client with AES-256-GCM, using a key made for that share alone. The key travels in the part of the link after the `#`, which browsers don't send to servers, so we store ciphertext we can't read. One exception: **shares created from Slack are encrypted on our servers**, because the credential passes through Slack first. Secure Request answers are encrypted in the submitter's browser.\n\nIn practice: the credential sits encrypted in 1Password; CredenShare carries a copy across the gap to someone outside, and that copy expires.\n\n## Which tool should you use for each handoff?\n\n| Situation | Use | Why |\n|---|---|---|\n| A teammate in your 1Password account needs the AWS root password | 1Password | Share the vault or item; it stays in sync. |\n| A contractor needs the staging database password for two days | CredenShare | 48-hour link, one view, passcode by text message, and a log showing it was opened. |\n| A client must send you their domain registrar login | CredenShare | A Secure Request: they type it into an encrypted form, and nothing lands in your inbox. |\n| A vendor needs a rotated API key, and you need proof of delivery | CredenShare | Access log with time and IP; expire the link once it's used. |\n| An AI agent needs a scoped, short-lived credential | CredenShare | Create the share through the API or MCP server, with an expiry. |\n| A guest needs the office Wi-Fi password | Either | 1Password item sharing is fine for low-risk, one-off shares. |\n\n## How do teams use 1Password and CredenShare together?\n\n1. **Store** the credential in 1Password, where it belongs.\n2. **Copy it into a CredenShare share** when it has to leave the company. Set an expiry and a view limit, and add a passcode you send through a different channel.\n3. **Send the link.** The recipient opens it in a browser, with no account.\n4. **Check the access log** to confirm it was received, then let the link expire.\n5. **Going the other way,** send a Secure Request, then save what you receive into 1Password.\n\nOnly the people who create shares and requests need a CredenShare seat; recipients and submitters don't need an account.\n\n## What does it cost to use both?\n\nOn published prices, billed yearly:\n\n- **1Password Business** for a 10-person team: 10 × $8.99 = **$89.90 a month** ($1,078.80 a year). The **Teams Starter Pack** covers up to 10 people for **$24.95 a month**.\n- **CredenShare**: **Free** covers 3 shares a day. **Plus** ($49.99 a month, or $499.99 a year) includes 5 seats, teams and Slack. **Business** ($99.99 a month, or $999.99 a year) adds Secure Requests, the API and IP allowlists. See [pricing](/pricing).\n\nBecause recipients don't need seats, most teams put only the people who hand off credentials on CredenShare.\n\n## When is 1Password alone enough?\n\n- You only share **inside** your 1Password account: vaults and groups cover it.\n- An occasional item link, at most 30 days, with no passcode, is all you need.\n- You never need to **collect** credentials from people outside.\n\nIf those hold, you don't need CredenShare. If you regularly hand credentials to, or get them from, people outside your vault, the two work well together.\n\n## Verdict\n\n1Password is the right place to keep your team's credentials. CredenShare is the right way to move one across the edge of the vault: out to someone who isn't in it, or in from someone who is. Use them together.\n\n**Related:** [CredenShare vs Bitwarden](/compare/bitwarden) · [1Password vs Bitwarden](/compare/1password-vs-bitwarden) · [All comparisons](/compare)\n\n---\n\n**Sources** (checked October 23, 2026):\n\n- [1Password: share items](https://support.1password.com/share-items/)\n- [1Password: manage item sharing](https://support.1password.com/manage-item-sharing/)\n- [1Password: security](https://support.1password.com/1password-security/) and [1password.com/security](https://1password.com/security)\n- [1Password: activity log](https://support.1password.com/activity-log/)\n- [1Password pricing](https://1password.com/pricing/password-manager) and [business pricing](https://1password.com/pricing/business)\n- [CredenShare encryption](https://docs.credenshare.io/security/encryption) and [plans and limits](https://docs.credenshare.io/account/plans-and-limits)\n\n*1Password is a trademark of AgileBits Inc.
