They're open source and independently reviewed: KeePass by EU-FOSSA and BSI, KeePassXC with an ANSSI CSPN security visa.\n\n**CredenShare** is built for the handoff: one credential, to one person, through an encrypted link that expires, with a record of every view.\n\n## How do you share a password from KeePass?\n\nOn the projects' own pages:\n\n- **KeePass:** several people can use **one database file**, usually on a network share, all with the **same master key**. \"There are no per-group or per-entry access control lists.\" There's no way to share a single entry with someone outside.\n- **KeePassXC:** **KeeShare** imports, exports and synchronises shared groups between databases.\n- **Neither** has links, expiry, view limits or requests.\n\nSo sending one password to a contractor means copying it somewhere. That somewhere should be an expiring, encrypted link, not an email.\n\n## What does CredenShare add?\n\n### Collecting credentials from outside\n\n[Secure Requests](/solutions/secure-requests) (Business and Enterprise) send someone a form with the fields you choose. Their browser encrypts each answer to a key belonging to the request before it's sent. You can require them to sign in with two-factor authentication, and reuse field templates.\n\n### A record of every handoff\n\nEach CredenShare share logs the time and IP address of every view, kept for 3 to 180 days depending on the plan (not on Free). KeePass keeps no record of where a copied password went; CredenShare logs each view of a share.\n\n### Links on the recipient's schedule\n\nExpiry from **1 hour to 3 months**, optionally counted from the **first open**, with view limits, passcodes (Solo and above, with a failed-attempt limit), required sign-in, and IP allowlists (Business and Enterprise).\n\n### Where your team already works\n\nA **Slack** app (Plus and above), a **browser extension** for Chrome and Firefox, and a **REST API, SDKs for Node, Python, Go and Rust, an MCP server** for AI agents, and **webhooks** (Business and Enterprise). None of this replaces KeePass: it sits at the edge of it.\n\n## CredenShare and KeePass side by side\n\n| | CredenShare | KeePass |\n|---|---|---|\n| **Built for** | Sending and collecting credentials through expiring encrypted links | A local, encrypted password database |\n| **Everyday password storage** | No | Yes |\n| **Share one entry with someone outside** | Yes | No; share the whole file (KeePass) or synced groups (KeeShare) |\n| **Expiring links and view limits** | 1 hour to 3 months, optionally from the first open | No |\n| **Access log** | Views, times and IP addresses | No |\n| **Collect a credential from outside** | Secure Requests (Business and Enterprise) | No |\n| **Cloud** | Hosted service | None; local files |\n| **Open source** | No | Yes |\n| **Price** | Free plan; paid from $9.99/month | Free |\n\n*KeePass details checked on October 23, 2026 against its own pages; see the sources below.*\n\n## What can each company's servers see?\n\n- **KeePass** encrypts the database locally with AES-256 or ChaCha20, with AES-KDF or Argon2 key derivation and an HMAC-SHA-256 integrity check. **KeePassXC** uses AES-256 or Twofish in KDBX 4. There's no server.\n\n- **CredenShare:** Shares made in the web app, through the API or with the SDKs are encrypted in your browser or client with AES-256-GCM, using a key made for that share alone; the key travels in the part of the link after the `#`, which browsers don't send to servers. Shares created from Slack are the exception: they're encrypted on our servers. Secure Request answers are encrypted in the submitter's browser.\n\n## Which tool should you use for each handoff?\n\n| Situation | Use | Why |\n|---|---|---|\n| You keep your own passwords offline | KeePass or KeePassXC | Local, encrypted, free. |\n| A colleague needs one password | CredenShare | Share one entry, not the whole database. |\n| A contractor needs access for a week | CredenShare | Expiring link with a passcode and an access log. |\n| A client sends you their admin login | CredenShare | A Secure Request, then save it into KeePass. |\n\n## How do teams use KeePass and CredenShare together?\n\n1. **Keep** your credentials in your KeePass or KeePassXC database.\n2. **To send one,** copy it into a CredenShare share with an expiry, a view limit and a passcode.\n3. **To receive one,** send a Secure Request, then add the answer to your database.\n4. **Don't share the database file or master key** to hand over a single password.\n\n## What does it cost to use both?\n\nKeePass and KeePassXC are **free** and open source.\n\n**CredenShare**: **Free** covers 3 shares a day. **Plus** ($49.99 a month, or $499.99 a year) includes 5 seats, teams and Slack. **Business** ($99.99 a month, or $999.99 a year) adds Secure Requests, the API and IP allowlists. See [pricing](/pricing). Only people who create shares and requests need a seat.\n\n## When is KeePass alone enough?\n\n- You never share individual passwords with other people.\n- Your team shares one database with one master key, and that's acceptable for you.\n- You never collect credentials from people outside.\n\n## Before you share a credential: a checklist\n\nThese apply whichever tool you use.\n\n1. **Send the link and the passcode through different channels.** For example, the link by email and the passcode by text message.\n2. **Watch out for link scanners.** Some email security filters and chat apps open links automatically, which can use up a one-view link. Send the link as plain text through a channel that doesn't pre-open links, or allow a second view with a short expiry.\n3. **Don't open the link to test it.** On a one-view link, your test is the view.\n4. **Pick the shortest expiry that works.** If you don't know when the recipient will act, a link that starts counting at the first open is safer than a long fixed window.\n5. **Rotate after the handoff when you can.** The link expires, but the credential is still valid.\n6. **Keep the original in your password manager.** A sharing link is a delivery method, not storage.\n\n## Verdict\n\nKeePass and KeePassXC are trusted, offline vaults with no sharing service. CredenShare gives you a safe way to send one credential, or receive one, without sharing your whole database.\n\n**Related:** [Bitwarden vs KeePass](/compare/bitwarden-vs-keepass) · [CredenShare vs Bitwarden](/compare/bitwarden) · [All comparisons](/compare)\n\n---\n\n**Sources** (checked October 23, 2026):\n\n- **KeePass:** [security](https://keepass.info/help/base/security.html), [multi-user](https://keepass.info/help/base/multiuser.html), [ratings and audits](https://keepass.info/ratings.html)\n- **KeePassXC:** [home](https://keepassxc.org/), [documentation](https://keepassxc.org/docs/)\n- **CredenShare:** [encryption](https://docs.credenshare.io/security/encryption), [plans and limits](https://docs.credenshare.io/account/plans-and-limits)\n\n*KeePass is a trademark of its owner.
