CredenShare is not a password manager.\n- **Add CredenShare** when the person on the other side has no LastPass account: a contractor, a client, a vendor, an AI agent. Or when you need a credential **from** them.\n- LastPass's sharing is built between LastPass accounts; its own help says recipients must create one. CredenShare links open in any browser.\n\n*Who this page is for: teams on LastPass that exchange credentials with people outside their organization.*\n\n## What problem does each tool solve?\n\n**LastPass** answers *\"where do our passwords live, and who in the company can use them?\"*: an encrypted vault, shared folders with permissions, SSO and directory integrations on its business plans, and up to 100+ policies on Business.\n\n**CredenShare** answers *\"how does this credential reach someone outside, and how do I know it arrived?\"*: an encrypted link that expires, a record of every view, and Secure Requests to collect credentials from outside.\n\n## Can LastPass share a password with someone who doesn't use LastPass?\n\nLastPass sharing is designed **between LastPass accounts**: shared folders, and items shared by email through the Sharing Center. Its own help pages disagree about non-users; the Sharing Center article says the recipient \"must create a LastPass account\" to accept a share. We found no expiring or view-limited share links on LastPass's pages.\n\nSo for a contractor who will never have a LastPass seat, or a client who sends you a login once, a different handoff is needed.\n\n## What does CredenShare add?\n\n### Collecting credentials from outside\n\n[Secure Requests](/solutions/secure-requests) (Business and Enterprise) send someone a form with the fields you choose. Their browser encrypts each answer to a key belonging to the request before it's sent. You can require them to sign in with two-factor authentication, and reuse field templates.\n\n### A record of every handoff\n\nEach CredenShare share logs the time and IP address of every view, kept for 3 to 180 days depending on the plan (not on Free). LastPass's business reporting tracks activity in your account; CredenShare's log tracks what happened to a link after it left.\n\n### Links on the recipient's schedule\n\nExpiry from **1 hour to 3 months**, optionally counted from the **first open**, with view limits, passcodes (Solo and above, with a failed-attempt limit), required sign-in, and IP allowlists (Business and Enterprise).\n\n### Where your team already works\n\nA **Slack** app (Plus and above), a **browser extension** for Chrome and Firefox, and a **REST API, SDKs for Node, Python, Go and Rust, an MCP server** for AI agents, and **webhooks** (Business and Enterprise). None of this replaces LastPass: it sits at the edge of it.\n\n## CredenShare and LastPass side by side\n\n| | CredenShare | LastPass |\n|---|---|---|\n| **Built for** | Sending a credential to someone, or collecting one, through an encrypted link that expires | Storing and sharing passwords among LastPass users |\n| **Everyday password storage** | No | Yes |\n| **Share with someone without an account** | Yes, the core feature | Its help says recipients must create a LastPass account |\n| **Expiring, view-limited links** | 1 hour to 3 months, optionally from the first open; view limits | Not found on its pages |\n| **Access log per share** | Views, times and IP addresses, 3–180 days by plan | Not described per share |\n| **Collect a credential from outside** | Secure Requests (Business and Enterprise) | Not found on its pages |\n| **SSO** | Not offered | Business (3 apps) and Business Max (unlimited) |\n| **Free plan** | Yes: 3 shares a day | Yes, limited to one device type |\n| **Price** | Paid plans from $9.99/month (Solo) | Teams $4.25, Business $7, Business Max $9 per user per month (LastPass blog, billed annually) |\n\n*LastPass details checked on October 23, 2026 against its own pages; see the sources below.*\n\n## What can each company's servers see?\n\n- **LastPass** encrypts your vault with AES-256, with a key derived from your master password through PBKDF2-SHA256 (600,000 iterations), and states that it \"has zero knowledge of your encrypted vault data\".\n\n- **CredenShare:** Shares made in the web app, through the API or with the SDKs are encrypted in your browser or client with AES-256-GCM, using a key made for that share alone; the key travels in the part of the link after the `#`, which browsers don't send to servers. Shares created from Slack are the exception: they're encrypted on our servers. Secure Request answers are encrypted in the submitter's browser.\n\n## Which tool should you use for each handoff?\n\n| Situation | Use | Why |\n|---|---|---|\n| A teammate with a LastPass seat needs a login | LastPass | Share the item or folder; it stays in sync. |\n| A contractor without LastPass needs the staging password for a week | CredenShare | A link that opens in any browser, with a passcode and an access log. |\n| A client must send you their domain registrar login | CredenShare | A Secure Request instead of an email. |\n| A vendor needs a rotated API key, and you need proof it arrived | CredenShare | Time and IP address of every view. |\n| An AI agent needs a short-lived credential | CredenShare | Create the share through the API or MCP server. |\n\n## How do teams use LastPass and CredenShare together?\n\n1. **Store** the credential in LastPass, and share it with colleagues through folders.\n2. **When it has to leave the company,** copy it into a CredenShare share: set an expiry, a view limit and a passcode sent through a second channel.\n3. **Check the access log** to confirm delivery.\n4. **When a credential has to come in,** send a Secure Request, then save the answer into LastPass.\n\n## What does it cost to use both?\n\nOn LastPass's own published prices (from its blog, billed annually), 10 users on **Teams** cost 10 × $4.25 = **$42.50 a month**, and on **Business** 10 × $7 = **$70 a month**.\n\n**CredenShare**: **Free** covers 3 shares a day. **Plus** ($49.99 a month, or $499.99 a year) includes 5 seats, teams and Slack. **Business** ($99.99 a month, or $999.99 a year) adds Secure Requests, the API and IP allowlists. See [pricing](/pricing). Only people who create shares and requests need a seat.\n\n## When is LastPass alone enough?\n\n- Everyone you share with has a LastPass account.\n- You never need to send a credential to, or collect one from, someone outside.\n- You don't need a record of outside handoffs.\n\n## Before you share a credential: a checklist\n\nThese apply whichever tool you use.\n\n1. **Send the link and the passcode through different channels.** For example, the link by email and the passcode by text message.\n2. **Watch out for link scanners.** Some email security filters and chat apps open links automatically, which can use up a one-view link. Send the link as plain text through a channel that doesn't pre-open links, or allow a second view with a short expiry.\n3. **Don't open the link to test it.** On a one-view link, your test is the view.\n4. **Pick the shortest expiry that works.** If you don't know when the recipient will act, a link that starts counting at the first open is safer than a long fixed window.\n5. **Rotate after the handoff when you can.** The link expires, but the credential is still valid.\n6. **Keep the original in your password manager.** A sharing link is a delivery method, not storage.\n\n## Verdict\n\nLastPass is built to keep and share passwords inside your organization. CredenShare is built for the edge of it: people without LastPass, and credentials that have to come in from outside. Use them together.\n\n**Related:** [CredenShare vs 1Password](/compare/1password) · [1Password vs LastPass](/compare/1password-vs-lastpass) · [Bitwarden vs LastPass](/compare/bitwarden-vs-lastpass)\n\n---\n\n**Sources** (checked October 23, 2026):\n\n- **LastPass:** [Sharing Center](https://support.lastpass.com/help/use-the-sharing-center-lp020007), [password sharing](https://www.lastpass.com/features/password-sharing), [zero-knowledge security](https://www.lastpass.com/security/zero-knowledge-security), [business plans](https://www.lastpass.com/pricing-business), [blog (prices)](https://blog.lastpass.com/posts/lastpass-vs-nordpass)\n- **CredenShare:** [encryption](https://docs.credenshare.io/security/encryption), [plans and limits](https://docs.credenshare.io/account/plans-and-limits)\n\n*LastPass is a trademark of its owner.
