1Password vs Dashlane
Two business-focused password managers with very different approaches to sharing outside the company. Here's how they compare.
The short answer
- Choose 1Password for the Secret Key, Watchtower and Travel Mode, and flexible outside sharing (1 hour to 30 days, or one view, with email verification).
- Choose Dashlane for Argon2d key derivation, SAML-based "Confidential SSO" and SCIM on its Password Management plan, and a CLI that feeds secrets into environment variables.
- Note: Dashlane ended its free plan in September 2025, and its outside links are fixed at one view or 24 hours. For longer, logged or two-way handoffs, add CredenShare to either.

Checked on October 23, 2026. 1Password prices are from its pricing pages. Dashlane's pricing page showed placeholders; its prices are from Dashlane's own blog (August 2026, billed annually), which lists Password Management at $8 and in one table at $4, so confirm with Dashlane. See the sources below.
Which is cheaper, 1Password or Dashlane?
They're close on full business plans. For 10 people, billed annually: 1Password Business is $89.90 a month and Dashlane Password Management, at $8 per user, $80. 1Password's Teams Starter Pack, at $24.95 a month for up to 10 people, is the cheapest option for small teams. Dashlane's Credential Protection, at $4 per user, is a lighter plan.
Neither has a free plan for teams.
Which is more secure, 1Password or Dashlane?
Both encrypt on your device and say they can't read your data.
- 1Password combines your account password with a 128-bit Secret Key that never leaves your devices, so a leaked password alone can't decrypt your vault. It uses AES-GCM-256 and SRP sign-in.
- Dashlane derives keys with Argon2d (3 iterations, 32 MB memory, 2 threads) and encrypts with AES256-CBC-HMAC: "Dashlane can never view or access user credentials." Its Confidential SSO decrypts inside AWS Nitro Enclaves, and it publishes its mobile apps' source code for audit.
Both hold SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 and run public bug bounties.
How do they share with people outside your company?
This is the clearest difference.
- 1Password item links last 1 hour to 30 days, or one view, and can be limited to people who verify their email, or to an approved domain on Business.
- Dashlane links (added in March 2026) need no recipient account and are encrypted on the sender's device, with the key in the link. But each link is one login, lasts one view or 24 hours, whichever comes first, and can't be changed or revoked. Links are created in the web app, and a business must enable them.
Dashlane's approach is deliberately strict, which suits quick, same-day handoffs. For a contractor who starts next week, it's too short.
Which is better for developers?
- 1Password: a CLI, service accounts for automation, Connect servers for a private REST API, and an SSH agent with Git commit signing.
- Dashlane: a CLI that injects secrets into environment variables and templates and pulls audit logs, a GitHub Action, and a read-only Public API for team data.
Which should you pick? Scenarios
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A small team (up to 10) on a budget | 1Password | The Teams Starter Pack is $24.95 a month in total. |
| SAML SSO with SCIM provisioning | Dashlane | Confidential SSO and SCIM are on Password Management. |
| Developers who inject secrets into builds | Dashlane, or 1Password | Dashlane's CLI fills environment variables and has a GitHub Action; 1Password has service accounts and Connect. |
| Frequent travel across borders | 1Password | Travel Mode removes vaults from your devices while you travel. |
| Handoffs that last longer than a day | 1Password | Item links last up to 30 days; Dashlane links end after one view or 24 hours. |
| You want the strictest outside links by default | Dashlane | One view or 24 hours, encrypted on your device, no settings to get wrong. |
Whichever you pick, a credential that has to reach someone outside it, or come from someone outside, is the gap covered below.
What neither 1Password nor Dashlane does
Both are built around your vault. How each reaches people outside it:
- 1Password: item links that anyone, or verified email addresses, can open for 1 hour to 30 days or one view.
- Dashlane: links fixed at one view or 24 hours, one login per link, not revocable.
At the edge of the vault, three needs keep coming up that neither covers on its own pages:
- Collecting a credential from someone outside. A client's hosting login or a vendor's API key: there's no request form, so it usually arrives by email or chat.
- Proof that an outside handoff arrived. Their logs track your organization; a per-link record of who opened a share, when and from where, isn't described.
- Handoffs on the recipient's schedule. Links that last longer, or start counting at the first open.
CredenShare is built for that edge, and works with either:
- Secure Requests (Business and Enterprise): send a form with the fields you need; each answer is encrypted in the sender's browser.
- Access logs for every share: views, times and IP addresses, kept 3 to 180 days by plan.
- Expiry from 1 hour to 3 months, optionally from the first open, plus passcodes and view limits.
- Slack, a browser extension, a REST API, SDKs and an MCP server for AI agents.
Shares made in the web app, API and SDKs are encrypted in your browser or client; Slack-created shares are encrypted on our servers. Only the people who create shares and requests need a CredenShare seat.
Before you share a credential: a checklist
These apply whichever tool you use.
- Send the link and the passcode through different channels. For example, the link by email and the passcode by text message.
- Watch out for link scanners. Some email security filters and chat apps open links automatically, which can use up a one-view link. Send the link as plain text through a channel that doesn't pre-open links, or allow a second view with a short expiry.
- Don't open the link to test it. On a one-view link, your test is the view.
- Pick the shortest expiry that works. If you don't know when the recipient will act, a link that starts counting at the first open is safer than a long fixed window.
- Rotate after the handoff when you can. The link expires, but the credential is still valid.
- Keep the original in your password manager. A sharing link is a delivery method, not storage.
Verdict: 1Password or Dashlane?
- Pick 1Password for the Secret Key, Watchtower and Travel Mode, and more flexible outside sharing.
- Pick Dashlane for SAML Confidential SSO with SCIM, Argon2d, and its secrets-to-environment CLI.
