NordPass vs Bitwarden
A password manager from the makers of NordVPN against the best-known open-source option. How they compare.
The short answer
- Choose Bitwarden for open source, self-hosting, a free plan with unlimited devices, and Send.
- Choose NordPass for XChaCha20-based encryption, time-limited sharing inside your team, a low price for 10-person teams, and the Nord ecosystem.
- Both can share outside; neither collects credentials from outside. For that, add CredenShare.

Which is more secure, NordPass or Bitwarden?
- NordPass describes a zero-knowledge architecture: the user's private key is encrypted with XChaCha20-Poly1305, and the master key is derived with Argon2id.
- Bitwarden encrypts on your device with AES-CBC-256 and HMAC, offers Argon2id or PBKDF2, and is open source with annual third-party audits.
Both cite ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2.
Which is better for business?
Both offer SSO, automatic provisioning and an activity log. NordPass keeps Entra ID, ADFS and Okta SSO and provisioning for Enterprise ($5.99 per user a month, billed yearly); Bitwarden Enterprise is $6. Bitwarden adds self-hosting and Directory Connector (LDAP and AD). NordPass adds time-limited sharing inside your organization. For 10 people billed yearly, NordPass Teams is $19.90 a month and Bitwarden Teams $40.
How do they share with people outside?
- NordPass, since release 7.12, shares items by link with people without an account, on business and personal plans. In an organization, admins must turn on sharing outside it; it is off by default. Its pages don't yet describe link expiry options.
- Bitwarden Send shares text or files for up to 31 days, with a password and view limit.
Which should you pick? Scenarios
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |

| A 10-person team on a budget | NordPass Teams | $19.90 a month, billed yearly. |
| You already use NordVPN | NordPass | Same ecosystem. |
What neither NordPass nor Bitwarden does
Both are built around your vault. How each reaches people outside it:
- NordPass: item links to people without an account (release 7.12), if admins allow it; expiry options not described.
- Bitwarden: Bitwarden Send, text or files, up to 31 days.
At the edge of the vault, three needs keep coming up that neither covers on its own pages:
- Collecting a credential from someone outside. A client's hosting login or a vendor's API key: there's no request form, so it usually arrives by email or chat.
- Proof that an outside handoff arrived. Their logs track your organization; a per-link record of who opened a share, when and from where, isn't described.
- Handoffs on the recipient's schedule. Links that last longer, or start counting at the first open.
CredenShare is built for that edge, and works with either:
- Secure Requests (Business and Enterprise): send a form with the fields you need; each answer is encrypted in the sender's browser.
- Access logs for every share: views, times and IP addresses, kept 3 to 180 days by plan.
- Expiry from 1 hour to 3 months, optionally from the first open, plus passcodes and view limits.
- Slack, a browser extension, a REST API, SDKs and an MCP server for AI agents.
Shares made in the web app, API and SDKs are encrypted in your browser or client; Slack-created shares are encrypted on our servers. Only the people who create shares and requests need a CredenShare seat.
Before you share a credential: a checklist
These apply whichever tool you use.
- Send the link and the passcode through different channels. For example, the link by email and the passcode by text message.
- Watch out for link scanners. Some email security filters and chat apps open links automatically, which can use up a one-view link. Send the link as plain text through a channel that doesn't pre-open links, or allow a second view with a short expiry.
- Don't open the link to test it. On a one-view link, your test is the view.
- Pick the shortest expiry that works. If you don't know when the recipient will act, a link that starts counting at the first open is safer than a long fixed window.
- Rotate after the handoff when you can. The link expires, but the credential is still valid.
- Keep the original in your password manager. A sharing link is a delivery method, not storage.
Verdict: NordPass or Bitwarden?
- Pick Bitwarden for open source, self-hosting and a free plan on every device.
- Pick NordPass for time-limited team sharing and the Nord ecosystem.
Whichever you choose, cover the outside handoffs neither is built for.
