MD5 FAQ
What is MD5?
MD5 (Message-Digest Algorithm 5) produces a 128-bit hash value, typically rendered as a 32-character hex string. It was designed in 1991 by Ronald Rivest.
Is MD5 secure?
MD5 is considered cryptographically broken. Collision attacks are trivial on modern hardware. Do not use it for security-sensitive applications like password storage or digital signatures.
When should I use MD5?
MD5 is still useful for non-security purposes like checksums, data deduplication, and cache key generation where collision resistance is not critical.
Can I use this in production?
For checksums and non-security use, yes. For password hashing or integrity verification use SHA-256+ or a password-specific algorithm like Argon2id.
