SHA-1 FAQ

What is SHA-1?

SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm 1) produces a 160-bit hash value. It was designed by the NSA and published by NIST in 1995.

Is SHA-1 secure?

SHA-1 is deprecated for security use. Google demonstrated a practical collision attack (SHAttered) in 2017. Major browsers and certificate authorities have phased it out.

What should I use instead?

Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for general-purpose hashing. For password storage, use Argon2id, bcrypt, or scrypt which are designed to be slow and memory-hard.

Where is SHA-1 still used?

SHA-1 remains in legacy systems, Git commit hashes (though Git is migrating to SHA-256), and some non-security checksum applications.

Verify integrity, then share securely
