SHA-256 FAQ
What is SHA-256?
SHA-256 is part of the SHA-2 family, producing a 256-bit (32-byte) hash. It is widely used in TLS/SSL, Bitcoin, and digital certificates.
Is SHA-256 secure?
Yes. SHA-256 has no known practical attacks. It provides 128 bits of collision resistance and is approved by NIST for all security applications.
SHA-256 vs SHA-512?
SHA-256 is faster on 32-bit systems; SHA-512 is faster on 64-bit systems and provides a larger security margin. Both are considered secure for the foreseeable future.
Should I use SHA-256 for passwords?
No. Fast hashes like SHA-256 can be brute-forced at billions per second on GPUs. Use Argon2id, bcrypt, or scrypt which are intentionally slow.
